How to perform a semi-annual inspection on a Broaster Ventless Fryer

Instructions on how to perform a semi-annual inspection on the Fire Suppression System.

Broaster Company VF-2 / VF-3i Semi-Annual Inspection


Inspection must be performed by certified service personnel, as per NFPA 17A

  1.  Install Safety Pin into suppressant canister valve before servicing Fire
    Suppression System
  2. Replace both fusible links
    a. Lower link (280°F - Broaster P/N 16000) just above the cooking pot
    b. Upper link (212°F - Broaster P/N 16077) holding up the damper inside the
        rear louvers
              i. Remove top panel by removing five screws to access
    c. Might need to replace the S-Hooks (Broaster P/N 16007)
    d. Might need to replace the Ball Cable (Broaster P/N 15993) connecting the
        lower link to the suppression canister valve
  3. Inspect the Fire Suppression Canister assembly for any damage or leaks
    a. Check the valve for any corrosion
    b. Check the gauge to ensure that the needle is in the green area
            i. Recharge canister if necessary
    c. Check the pressure switch to make sure that it isn’t damaged or cracked
    d. Make sure the spring is connected properly to the valve and is placing
        downward tension on the valve
  4.  Inspect the tubes and connections for leaks or corrosion
    a. Check that the compression nuts at the tube fittings are snug
  5. Check both of the fire suppression nozzles
    a. Lower nozzle just above the cooking well
    b. Upper nozzle behind the filter carriage
    c. Make sure that the Blow-Off Caps (Broaster P/N 16155) are properly
        installed on the nozzles
    d. Apply proper grease lubricant to both of the Blow-Off Caps
    e. Blow-Off Caps must be replaced annually regardless of condition
  6. Test electrical operation
    a. Disconnect one of the wires connecting the controls to the Fire
        Suppression Canister pressure switch
            i. The unit should be completely inoperable while the pressure switch
               is disconnected
    b. Re-connect wire to make sure power is now supplied to the controls
  7. ENSURE THAT SAFETY PIN IS REMOVED FROM CANISTER AND PIN IS
    HANGING SAFELY ON ITS CHAIN
  8. Provide a copy of the report to the equipment owner or their designee
    a. Make sure to notate any area where additional service is required or
        recommended.
  9. Date and sign the Semi-Annual and Maintenance log contained in the owner’s
    Operation Manual
  10. Ensure that the unit is properly tagged as being inspected on this date
  11. Reset the unit’s countdown timer so it will put out a reminder for the next semi-annual
    inspection
    a. For the Temp-N-Time unit (with the red LED display and the 10-digit
         number pad)
           i. Press and hold the STOP and #6 button for at least five seconds
           ii. If the red Fire System light is illuminated, it will go out and will light
              up again in six months as a reminder
    b. For the SmartTouch unit (with the touch screen controls) earlier versions
           i. Access the Setup Screen using 0540 as the PIN code
           ii. Select the Service Contact button
           iii. Press the hour counter display, and select YES to reset
           iv. If the Inspect Fire System notification is displayed on the Cook
                Screen, it will go away, to reappear again in six months
    c. For the SmartTouch unit (Later Versions)
           i. Access the Setup Screen using the operator’s PIN if necessary
           ii. Select the Alerts button
           iii. Select the hour counter and select YES to reset
           iv. If the Inspect Fire System notification is displayed on the Cook
               Screen, it will go away, to reappear again in six months

Ensure that any discrepancies that might affect the safe operation of
this unit are resolved before tagging the unit as safe to use.
